How to be your own social media guru: Using engagement data

The leaves are changing and the pumpkin spice lattes are brewing. Yes friends, it’s fall, the perfect season to step back and rethink your social media strategy. With a new channel popping up everyday, it’s easy to follow the latest shiny object. But before you turn on another profile, or pull the plug on the one you haven’t updated in months, take some time to review your data. There’s gold in those analytics and insights!

At last month’s 501 Tech NYC (a local meetup for NTEN members and their friends), we were happy to host George Weiner of Whole Whale, a digital agency that leverages data and technology to increase the impact of nonprofits. I first met George at NTEN’s Nonprofit Technology Conference several years ago when I learned about the great work he was doing as CTO of DoSomething. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to hear George speak at various meetups and with the students for the graduate classes I teach. He is one of the most entertaining presenters I’ve seen – funny, smart, and genuine. Grab an apple, and watch George’s humor-laden and insightfully interactive presentation inviting you to “be your own social media guru” below. You can also view his dynamic presentation via Prezi here

Special thanks to Lane Beauchamp, Joy Nelson, and Dex Ostling of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS for donating their awesome video skills and filming the event.

If this is a topic you want to learn more about, take a look at the excellent set of books, blogs, and other resources compiled by Whole Whale on their website. Be sure to also try their new tool: AllGoodText.com, a free product which sends you a text with key metrics to make sure things are “all good” with your website.

You can also join our 501 Tech NYC group on Facebook —it is open to all. And if you want to see what sessions we have planned for the future, take a look at our page of upcoming events. If you are in town this week, come on by to Idealist HQ this Wednesday night, October 15, where Rob Wu of CauseVox will teach us how to launch a nonprofit crowdfunding campaign.
