Fun with Favicons

Rebecca Hume

Alas, the favicon. Often an afterthought. Frequently forgotten. Okay, so maybe it’s not the biggest or most important element of your brand identity. But as the tiny flag that identifies your website in a sea of browser tabs, this mighty graphic deserves more than a fleeting fancy.

For a first-class favicon, it’s important to think creatively. A logo that works well at an inch or two may not translate to a 16-by-16-pixel grid. If yours is looking more smudgy than shapely, try focusing instead on a single element of your brand identity—maybe just a distinctive letter or shape.

Below are some of our favorite favicons, which manage to pack maximum brand recognition in minimal space.
